Recently, I had the chance to engage with two different groups—both filled with talented, successful people and both with strong histories of achievement. At first glance, the two experiences looked nearly identical. Each group was welcoming during the initial meeting, with positive energy and plenty of good conversation.

But the real difference didn’t show up in the introductions. It showed up in the follow-up.

One group carried a mindset of protection and distance. While polite and accomplished, their energy after the meeting felt guarded—almost as if the walls went back up once the event ended.

The other group embodied a mindset of abundance. Their follow-up was immediate and authentic, with outreach that felt relational, not transactional. Their perspective seemed clear: there’s plenty of opportunity out there, and by collaborating and supporting one another, everyone can grow together.

That difference in mindset made a lasting impact. It wasn’t about whether they had rules or boundaries—every strong group needs structure. It was about how those boundaries were carried. With the abundance-focused group, the boundaries didn’t create distance. They created clarity, allowing positivity and connection to shine through.

For me, the lesson was simple but powerful: the way you follow up and the mindset you bring to relationships speaks louder than any first impression.

And it’s the same in business. Clients can feel whether you’re operating from a mindset of scarcity—guarded, transactional, protective—or from a mindset of abundance—collaborative, engaging, and open. The latter doesn’t mean ignoring structure or boundaries; it means showing your value in a way that fosters trust, long-term connection, and togetherness.

As professionals, we should always ask ourselves: are we protecting, or are we growing? Are we holding on, or are we building together?

Because when we choose abundance, the follow-up isn’t just a courtesy—it’s the beginning of something lasting.
